Saint Louis Zoo President Jeffrey P. Bonner Elected Chair for Association of Zoos and Aquariums Board of Directors

The membership of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has elected Dr. Jeffrey P. Bonner, Dana Brown President and CEO of the Saint Louis Zoo, to the position of Chair of the Board of Directors.

Bonner will serve on the AZA Board of Directors as one of its four officers, each of whom also serves on the board’s executive committee. As chair, Bonner will be involved in every aspect of the national organization, including accreditation, ethics, animal welfare, and conservation.

“The AZA community recognizes Jeffrey’s strong leadership abilities, ” said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. “AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums will benefit from his extensive experience.”

In 2002, Bonner was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the Saint Louis Zoo. In 2009 his position was endowed by the Dana Brown Charitable Trust. He served as President and CEO of the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens from 1993 to 2002. Bonner received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1982. He is a Burgess Fellow, Traveling Fellow, Fulbright Scholar, President’s Fellow and a recipient of the National Research Service Award. He recently chaired the Amphibian Ark, a worldwide effort to ensure global survival of amphibians. He is the former chair of the International Species Information System and the Madagascar Fauna Group. Bonner is also the author of Sailing with Noah, Stories from the World of Zoos.
