Toronto sound design company, ImagesInSound, comes out triumphant winning the award for “Best Sound Design” for their accomplishments on Giant Screen Films’ “Wild Ocean” at the Giant Screen Cinema Association 2008 Film Awards held at the International Conference and Trade Show in Jersey City, New Jersey on September 10th.
ImagesInSound was awarded “Best Sound Design”, a new category of the GSCA Awards, against such considerable contenders as National Geographic and MacGillivray Freeman Films. “Wild Ocean”, now showing in theatres internationally in 2-D and 3-D, dives into the oceans of South Africa and explores the food-chain of the great blue abyss, which presented its share of challenges for the sound design team of ImagesInSound.
Starring the Humpback Whale, Copperhead Shark and Bottlenose Dolphin, providing dramatic sound effects called for some innovative thinking. To provide a unique sound experience, Images’ Sound Designers J.R. Fountain and Brian Eimer recorded over 150 water impact elements over the course of 2 summers.
They experimented with all props imaginable; from throwing a hammer, an axe and even lunging themselves into a pool, to swishing a fly swatter through water. To capture the sounds accurately, 2 microphones were placed above water and 2 microphones were placed beneath water. J.R. shares a trade secret in recording with water, “We cover the mics with condoms to ensure they don’t get fried during recording”.
ImagesInSound, founded in 2003 by Brian Eimer, provides creative audio post-production services for large format and special venue films, television, documentaries and themed attractions through their fresh downtown Toronto facilities at 111 Peter St. Visit their website at ImagesInSound.com
