Theme Parks: Southern Star Amusement begins vendor qualification program

News

Southern Star Amusement, Inc., which has been pursuing the opportunity to take over the former Six Flags amusement park property in New Orleans, is continuing to move forward with their efforts.

Danny Rogers, founder of the company, and long time amusement park veteran, stated, “As we have previously discussed with various city officials and area civic leaders, we wish to actively include the community in our rebuilding efforts.”   Rogers continued to say that Southern Star Amusement has now opened a section of their website that will allow potential vendors to apply for placement on their qualified vendor list.  “We would like to utilize as many local vendors and suppliers as we can.  Of course, quality, availability and pricing will remain as key selection criteria, but area vendors will receive preferential treatment.”

Southern Star Amusement has plans in place to transform the shuttered property with new themes and attractions.  Plans include restoring the remaining major rides, including the Mega Zeph wooden rollercoaster, adding several new rides and shows, as well as new water park rides and attractions.  “The new facility will not be ‘just’ a water park or ‘just’ a thrill park.  We will be incorporating features of each, along with quality family entertainment.”

Southern Star Amusement, Inc. has been negotiating to acquire control of the former Jazzland/Six Flags New Orleans amusement park property.  The property and equipment, owned by the Industrial Development Board but currently still under lease to Six Flags, has sat dormant for the past three years.  Six Flags has stated that they have no intention of re-opening the shuttered property and recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Rogers stated, “We are continuing preparations so that we may move immediately to take over a revised lease so that the park may be re-opened for the 2010 season.  Our architect team has been putting the finishing touches on the master plan.”  Company officials are making plans to begin construction on the site within the next few months.  At this time, they are primarily looking for vendors and suppliers that may be utilized during the construction process.  Rogers asks that New Orleans East and Orleans Parish based companies and service providers visit www.southernstaramusement.com if they wish to bid on work or materials during the construction period.  Other regional vendors are also welcomed to apply.
