Zoos: San Francisco Zoo & BitGravity Partner to Deliver the First 1080p Live Stream of the Gorilla Preserve and Infant Gorilla Hasani

News

Live Broadcast Provides Animal Lovers an Ongoing Close-up, High-Definition Glimpse of Popular Gorilla Lifestyle and Habitat

BitGravity, Inc., a global leader in video delivery, is powering the San Francisco Zoo’s live stream of the Jones Family Gorilla Preserve with BG Live output in 1080p. This marks the first time an Association of Zoo and Aquarium member has delivered a persistent, high definition (1080p) live video stream from its grounds to visitors on its Web site. BitGravity’s 1080p live streaming delivers a high definition online experience and provides the public an ongoing, front row seat from which to view live the six gorillas–Oscar Jonesy (male silverback), Bawang, Monifa, Zura, Nneka and famed infant Hasani–while outdoors during the day.

The Zoo will also live stream the upcoming celebration of Hasani’s first birthday, December 8, 2009, which will include a member-and media-only event at 9:30 AM and a large ice cake filled with treats for the gorillas donated by the San Francisco Ice Company.

"We are delighted to share our gorilla troop with the public on our Web site in crisp streams and stunning detail, " said Lora LaMarca, vice president of marketing for the San Francisco Zoo. "BitGravity’s stream quality, simple set-up, and low start-up costs make it a perfect solution for any zoo or aquarium to build the bridge between its audiences and its main attractions. We know this live stream will help drive more visitors to the San Francisco Zoo’s Web site and the zoo itself."

"1080p is the latest high definition video resolution and BitGravity delivers highly scalable, interactive experiences and live events without large IT teams or production services, " said Perry Wu, founder and CEO of BitGravity. "To stream live with an HD camera and Internet connection requires an Apple MacBook Pro loaded with BitGravity encoding software, a PCI expansion card, and an HDMA or HDSDI source connected to BitGravity’s network. Streaming live from zoos and aquariums is a perfect application of BG Live. The community can experience the day-to-day lives of the inhabitants, especially for popular newborn animals like Hasani."

BG Live is an affordable Flash-based, highly scalable, HD online streaming service built on BitGravity’s Distributed Origin-based network minimizing latency to create a great viewing experience and low total cost of ownership.
