Uzumasa Kyoto Village, a new immersive experience park for adults themed to the Edo-period, has opened in Kyoto, Japan.

A complete renovation of the former Toei Kyoto Studio Park, the new park's first phase launched on 28 March.

Following the reimagining, the park now offers evening entertainment for adults for the first time, including a Cho-Han experience and a "torture house".

The former immerses guests inside an Edo-period gambling house. In the latter, guests find themselves in the Edo period again for an "immersive interrogation simulation – conducted without any physical pain".

Highlights also include new restaurants where visitors can enjoy Kyoto cuisine, and cultural experiences in an Edo-era townscape, including ikebana, Noh theatre and a tea ceremony.

In the tea ceremony experience, guests eat traditional sweets while watching a tea master prepare their beverages. They can also make their own matcha.

Uzumasa's signature live show brings to life a full day in Edo-period Kyoto and sees the entire village become a live stage, where the drama unfolds around guests.

During this experience, titled Bridal Procession : A Feast of Cherry Blossoms, guests can explore at their own pace, meeting ninjas, samurai and more.

Additionally, the park's ninja show has been redesigned as a wordless production, making it accessible for guests from around the world.

And, a kimono costume experience allows visitors to dress up as Edo-period figures, from Shinsengumi warriors to oiran and geisha.

The second phase of the redevelopment is set to open in spring 2027 and includes five new shops and dining outlets, and an entertainment district.

The third phase, scheduled to launch in spring 2028, includes a theatre. After this, the park plans to add a bathhouse facility.
