Visitors will be able to view a recreated version of the original YouTube watch page

The V&A collaborated with YouTube on an 18-month-long project to rebuild the platform's design and user experience, utilising internet archives dating back to December 2006, the earliest available.

It will also use this to showcase a new acquisition: the first video uploaded to the site. 'Me at the Zoo' was posted on YouTube in April 2005 by its co-founder, Jawed Karim.

The 19-second clip, watched nearly 380 million times and liked over 18 million times, was shot with a digital camera and marked a key shift in user-generated content, media creation, and consumption.

It was one of the first instances of user interface design elements such as badges, rating buttons, sharing, and recommendation features.

A snapshot of internet history

"By reconstructing the original 2005 watchpage, we aren't just showing a video; we are inviting the public to step back in time to the beginning of a global, cultural phenomenon," says YouTube's chief executive Neal Mohan.

"It is a proud moment to see this piece of digital history housed in the V&A where we hope it will inspire generations to come."

Corinna Gardner, senior curator of design and digital at the V&A, says: “This snapshot of YouTube during the early days of web 2.0 marks an important moment in the history of the internet and digital design.

"The acquisition opens new storytelling opportunities for us to showcase and explore the ways in which the internet has shaped our world, from the birth of mainstream video sharing platforms through to today's hyper visual world and the media and creator economy that go with it."

A mini display at V&A East Storehouse will also explore the reconstruction process, highlighting the museum's dedication to collecting and preserving digital design.
