Polin Waterparks explores link between waterslides and applied neuroscience

Polin documentary neurorecreation

Polin Waterparks, a leader and innovator in waterpark technology, has announced that its Director of Marketing and Communications of Polin Waterparks, Söhret Pakis, recently participated in Prof. Dr Sinan Canan‘s AçıkBeyin Documentaries series.

Pakis has been leading research on the connection between waterslides and applied neuroscience, developing the first quantitative study in the field of neurorecreation.

The intersection of recreation and neuroscience

Neurorecreation explores the connection between recreation and neuroscience and is a relatively new area of research. Studies looking at this link have the potential to help us understand more about recreation, in terms of the behavioural, functional, physiological, and neurochemical effects.

The study lead by Pakis set out to explain the concept and phenomenon of “Neuro-Recreation” as the intersection of Recreation and Neuroscience. Findings suggest that recreation, which we already know is important for our emotions, physical, social and mental wellbeing, is a meaningful form of experience. Using neuroscientific measures can provide a new way of quantifying, understanding, designing, and optimizing experiences offered in a recreational context.

The aim of the study was to help provide feedback to those in the attractions and entertainment industry, such as designers, park investors and local government. Pakis’ work evaluates the waterslide experience in terms of biometric and neural parameters.

The episode can now be viewed on the AçıkBeyin Youtube channel with English subtitles.

Last year, Polin Waterparks announced the opening of a new ride, Fully 6, at the newly refurbished WhiteWater World, the sister park to Dreamworld on Australia’s Gold Coast. The design is inspired by the big waves and surf scene of the region and the ride was the first new waterpark attraction in the area to be built in five years. Fully 6 is the only tower in the country that offers six different and unique body slides.
