The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and ‘The Wilds’, the zoo’s wildlife conservation centre, have announced more than $50 million in projects over the next 12 to 18 months.
The zoo is investing approximately $32.5m of the funds in a redevelopment of its North America region, with a groundbreaking scheduled for autumn.
The rest of the $50m will go towards improving animal wellbeing, enhancing visitor experiences, and adding new lodging options.
The updated North America region will include new habitats for the Mexican wolf, bald eagle, black bear, North American river otter and trumpeter swan.
Redeveloping the North America region
Nearly $4m will expand and improve the bonobos’ indoor habitat to provide spaces for the animals to play, learn and thrive. Construction on this part of the project will start in spring.
“These projects – along with other enhancements focused on animal wellbeing – are modernizing our nearly 100-year old zoo, providing more security for our guests, and improving the lives of our animals,” said Tom Schmid, the zoo’s president and CEO.
Additionally, building work is continuing on the $7m RV campground at The Wilds, with the first guests expected to arrive in early 2024.
The 59-acre campground will feature 46 spots for RVs, 27 camping spots, hiking and biking trails, a playground, a shop and a dog park.

“I am so thankful for our major donors and federal and state partners who have chosen to invest in our future,” Schmid added.
“And I am proud of our operating teams, who consistently exceed our financial projections, allowing us to reinvest in our facilities and programs.”
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium houses more than 10,000 animals. It also includes the 22-acre Zoombezi Bay water park.
The Wilds is one of the largest, most cutting-edge conservation centres in North America. It is home to more than 500 animals and welcomes nearly 120,000 visitors every year.
