Good food must be saved and distributed to those who need it most, according to Last Mile, a Greater Cincinnati food rescue organisation. It gives local activists the tools they need to significantly improve the lives of their neighbours who are struggling with food insecurity. Last Mile combats food waste and works to eradicate local hunger by connecting Food Donors with NGOs that support the food insecure in the area via the use of technology and the power of volunteers.

In 2023, SSA Group and Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden donated 1,826 lbs of food, which translated to 1,522 meals for the community and 992 lbs of CO2 prevented.

Food and retail partner for Cincinnati Zoo

SSA Group has been working with partner Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden to help it achieve its goal of becoming Net Zero Waste by 2025. Together with community partners, a cross-departmental team at the zoo set out to make its major 2023 fundraising events zero waste. They were successful in diverting 3 tons of recyclable materials and 2 ½ tons of rubbish from the landfill.

As the zoo’s food and retail partner, the company also recently celebrated Green Restaurant awards for two cafes at Cincinnati Zoo: Base Camp Café and Outpost Café. SSA at Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden now has two 4-star and one 3-star certified restaurants from the Green Restaurant Association.

Last month, SSA Group announced a new partnership with Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens in Florida. The Group is now operating the dining and retail offerings at the attraction, where it is offering an enhanced level of service and new product lines. The attraction’s cafés now offer self-ordering kiosks which simplifies checkout.
