The Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo is now caring for a red fox that travelled as a stowaway from Southampton, England to the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The fox, a two-year-old male weighing about 11 pounds, was discovered among the cargo of a ship arriving at the port.

He was safely secured by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which worked with government wildlife officials to deliver the animal to the Bronx Zoo on 19 February.

The zoo said it regularly works with officials to help rescue illegally trafficked wildlife through local ports and airports.

Red fox in good condition

The fox is currently in the Bronx Zoo's animal health centre under the care of the animal and veterinary teams.

Initial examinations have shown that the fox appears to be in good condition, with the zoo's veterinarians now waiting for the results from additional routine health screenings.

Once the veterinary team determines that the fox is healthy, the Bronx Zoo will work with wildlife experts to find an appropriate long-term home for him.

"He seems to be settling in well," Keith Lovett, the zoo's director of animal programmes, told the Associated Press. "It's gone through a lot."

"Settling in well"

A spokesperson for Associated British Ports (ABP) Southampton said: "The Port of Southampton handles everything from cars to containers to cruises, but even we were surprised to find a fox had booked itself a transatlantic crossing.

"Clearly it fancied swapping the Solent for the Staten Island Ferry. Though next time we'd recommend it considers the Queen Mary 2, which offers the Southampton to New York route with considerably more comfort!"

Last summer, the Bronx Zoo reopened its World of Darkness exhibit for 25 nocturnal species, including sloths, sand cats and vampire bats, after a 16-year hiatus.
