IZE (International Zoo Educators) is an association dedicated to enhancing the role of zoos and aquariums in conservation education. Founded in 1972, the organisation began as a small collective of professionals committed to improving the educational aspects of the zoo and aquarium industry. Since then, IZE has grown to become a global leader in the space, with members in across 6 continents and over 50 countries.
Within its membership, IZE fosters collaboration among educators to share best practices and promote environmental stewardship. It does this through enabling resource sharing, networking, and professional development.
Membership
IZE has a growing membership of over 600 people from over 200 facilities. Association membership is open to any individual or organisation working in the zoo and aquarium industry and focused on education and interpretation. There are three different types of IZE membership:
- Individual Members: open to any individual working in the zoo and aquarium industry within the field of education and interpretation
- Associate Members: open to any individual who is interested in, but may not work in, the zoo and aquarium industry and wishes to support the objectives of IZE.
- Institutional Members: open to zoos, aquariums, nature/wildlife centres, and conservation institutions.
Members have access to a wide range of benefits, including a global network of professionals, exclusive resources, career advancement tools, and the opportunity to be engaged with IZE’s global impact and advocacy.

Conference
IZE hosts a prestigious biennial conference, drawing international attendees and speakers to share insights and strategies in conservation education. This event also provides a platform for attendees to network and discuss innovative approaches for inspiring visitors. The conference takes place every two years at the institution of an IZE member. In 2026, Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, South Africa, will be the location of the organisation’s 27th conference, taking place October 12 – 17.
