Dominic Strange
Chief Operating Officer
Chester Zoo
Dominic Strange, chief operating officer at Chester Zoo, has overseen the successful delivery of some of the most significant developments in the zoo’s history while strengthening its position as one of the UK’s leading visitor attractions and conservation charities.
During his time at Chester Zoo, he has led the development of Heart of Africa, one of the most ambitious and significant zoo developments in Europe. The project represents a bold vision for the future, creating an immersive experience that connects visitors with wildlife while generating vital support for global conservation efforts.
He has also overseen the creation and opening of The Reserve, an innovative hospitality concept that establishes a new model linking premium guest experiences directly with conservation outcomes. By integrating hospitality, visitor engagement and conservation funding, The Reserve demonstrates how commercial innovation can support organisational purpose.
“Managing a world-class conservation zoo that welcomes millions of visitors each year requires a unique combination of strategic thinking, commercial acumen and operational excellence. Under his stewardship, the organisation has achieved record-breaking performance, reaching an unprecedented 2.136 million visitors in 2025, the highest attendance in its history,” said one person who nominated Strange.
“This achievement reflects not only strong visitor demand but also the successful creation of new reasons to visit, ensuring the zoo remains relevant, exciting and accessible.”
