Efteling in the Netherlands has announced the opening date for its new family attraction. Named Hooghmoed, the new free-fall ride will open on 1 May.

Located directly next to Baron 1898, the new drop tower will share the same theming as the popular Bolliger & Mabillard dive coaster.

Set around Baron Gustave Hooghmoed’s so-called gold smeltery, a 14.5-metre-high chimney, the new ride features three drop towers, each 12 metres tall.

Per a press release, attraction visitors serve as young chimney sweeps who are tasked with reaching the top of the gold smeltery in order to clean it.

Spinning to a height of 9.5 metres, riders encounter the Witte Wieven (the Wailing Women), who sabotage the ride. After snapping the cable, riders plunge several metres into mist and smoke.

Designed for park visitors who find Baron 1898 too intense and those who fall under the height requirement of 1.32 metres, the minimum height to ride Hooghmoed is 90 cm.

Individual towers can accommodate 10 people, allowing up to 30 guests per ride, with each tower featuring its own ride sequence of approximately 1.5 minutes.

A dedicated accessible seat for guests with disabilities is available on each tower, though guests must be able to transfer independently from a wheelchair to the seat.

Free-fall ride opens on 1 May

Previously speaking about the attraction, Koen Sanders, the theme park's director of product, market and image, said: "This new family attraction seamlessly complements the area around Baron 1898.

“It is deliberately smaller in scale and as a result, adds to the capacity and attraction offer for a wider audience.

“Matching our area vision, the atmosphere and theme is similar to Baron 1898 to fully immerse our guests in the story of the baron and the wailing women.”
