Planning permission has been granted for the development of the new Fashion Museum Bath, described as one of the UK's most ambitious cultural projects.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has approved the plans for the world-class museum, which will be housed within the Grade II-listed former Old Post Office on New Bond Street.

The proposals by architects 6a will sensitively restore, repair and adapt the historic building, and include a new courtyard building and public garden at the centre of the site.

Once complete, the new museum will have more than double the floorspace of its former home, meaning more of its fashion collection can go on view. It will include a garden, a café, and a shop.

Councillor Paul Roper, cabinet member for economic and cultural sustainable development at Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: "Securing planning permission for Fashion Museum Bath is a landmark moment for our city.

"This project is about much more than a new museum: it is a transformative investment in Bath’s cultural future, bringing new life to historic buildings, creating inspiring spaces for learning and creativity, and ensuring that this world‑class collection can be enjoyed by generations to come."

New museum to open in 2030

The project is accompanied by improvements to the public realm, including the creation of a new city square and improved public space for a high-quality arrival experience.

Tom Emerson, founding director of 6a architects, said: "The museum will bring people and fashion together, showcasing an extraordinary collection with energy and excitement, and create new spaces for learning and nature.

"The transformation of the former Post Office will continue Bath’s legacy of outstanding architecture with a museum designed for today and for future generations."

Fashion Museum Bath is part of the city's wider Milsom Quarter regeneration project, which will refresh underused heritage buildings and transform public spaces.

Construction for Fashion Museum Bath, which is estimated to cost £39 million, is expected to start in winter 2027. An opening is targeted for December 2030.
