Toshiyuki Inoko Founder teamLab

Toshiyuki Inoko founded teamLab, a global group of artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, architects and mathematicians with digital art experiences in Shanghai, Tokyo and Macao. The group exhibits internationally, exploring the relationship between the self and the world through art.

“Physical media is no longer the limit,” teamLab told blooloop. “Digital technology has made it possible for artworks to expand physically. Art created using digital technology can easily expand. So, it provides us with a greater degree of autonomy within the space. We are now able to manipulate and use much larger spaces.”

In an interview with Tatler Asia, Inoko said: “I hope that after people come and see the artworks, it expands how they perceive the world. Everything in this world exists in a continuity. We hope people realise that continuity itself is beautiful and life-affirming.”

teamLab Borderless first opened as a permanent museum in Tokyo in June 2018. This was followed by a teamLab Borderless in Shanghai. teamLab SuperNature Macao later launched at the Venetian Macao.

teamLab’s latest venue in Abu Dhabi is slated for completion in 2024. Covering an area of 17,000 square metres, teamLab Phenomena will feature art installations that are unique to the emirate. Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi, CEO of Miral, said the space will use “cutting-edge immersive technology to interpret environmental phenomena”.
