Chinese e-commerce and technology company JD.com has announced plans for the new JD Museum in Shenzhen, China.

Due to open in late 2027, the JD Museum will focus on contemporary visual and performing arts and will be located in the new headquarters of JD.com in Shenzhen.

Designed by architecture firm Büro Ole Scheeren, with spatial design by Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, the building will cover more than 10,000 square metres.

Dedicated to connecting visitors through art and technology, the museum will have facilities for live performances, immersive installations, exhibitions, workshops and creative retail.

Intersection of art and technology

Its programming will focus on art as a cross-disciplinary experience and will address issues like technology, ecology and urbanism.

JD Museum will be led by executive director Robin Peckham, who said: "I am thrilled to help launch a new cultural chapter for a company that is already one of the most fascinating stories in the development of the Chinese technology sector.

"Shenzhen feels like the most exciting place in the world to explore the intersection of art and technology right now."

Peckham is a curator and editor who has served as co-director of Taipei Dangdai Art & Ideas (2019–2025) and editor-in-chief of LEAP, the international art magazine of contemporary China (2014–2019).

He has organised exhibitions on art, technology, popular culture, and the family for Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Fosun Foundation, and K11 Art Foundation.

'Unboxing JD Museum'

Ahead of its opening in 2027, JD Museum will host a community art initiative called 'Unboxing JD Museum', offering pop-up workshops and exhibitions using JD.com's iconic delivery boxes.

The project will invite creative input from artists, curators, architects, and the JD.com community, including employees and their families and friends.

More details on the exhibitions and and employee participation initiatives will be announced later this year.
