Laura Read

Chief Executive

Marwell Wildlife

Laura Read is chief executive of Marwell Wildlife, bringing two decades of leadership experience across destination management, retail, hospitality and events to the zoo and conservation sector. Since taking up the role in March, she has focused on combining commercial sustainability with conservation, education and climate advocacy.

With a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Warwick, she brings together commercial expertise and an understanding of environmental stewardship, helping Marwell develop its visitor experience while advancing its conservation mission.

Her ambitions for Marwell include doubling visitor numbers and increasing annual educational school visits to 100,000 by 2035. She is also supporting local conservation initiatives, including establishing a crayfish breeding centre and planning a dedicated nature reserve on the estate.

Climate resilience is another priority. Read has championed greater awareness of climate breakdown, including screening The People’s Emergency Briefing for staff and the public to encourage discussion about the implications of a warming world.

She has also set a target for Marwell to achieve absolute net-zero carbon emissions by 2035, encompassing its supply chain and international activities.

By focusing on the One Health principle, climate education, and long-term organisational sustainability, Read is positioning Marwell Wildlife for the challenges ahead while strengthening its contribution to conservation.
