Linda Conlon
CEO
International Centre for Life
Linda Conlon MBE DL is chief executive of the International Centre for Life in Newcastle upon Tyne, a unique science village bringing together a public science centre, medical research, healthcare, education and biotechnology.
A member of the original team, Conlon has played a key role in transforming a previously derelict area of Newcastle into an internationally recognised centre for science engagement and innovation. Life celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2025.
Speaking to blooloop about Life in 2026, she said: “People fundamentally need connection; they need belonging and a sense that they matter. For me, the job's about bringing those things together, helping people engage with fast-moving science but doing it in a way that still feels human, relevant and inclusive.”
Conlon has more than 25 years’ experience in science engagement. She is a past president and chair of the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) and was the first European woman elected to its presidency. In 2024, she became the first European woman to receive the ASTC Fellow Award for Outstanding Contribution, recognising her contribution to advancing science centres and public understanding of science.
Before joining Life, Conlon worked in regional development and urban regeneration, contributing to major waterfront developments that attracted around £1 billion in investment.
She was awarded an MBE in 2016 for services to science and science education and became a Deputy Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear in 2020. In 2026, she received an honorary Doctor of Science from Northumbria University in recognition of her contribution to science engagement in the North East.
