Event, the experience design agency, has been appointed to develop the final stage exhibition plans for the Natural History Museum of Denmark’s prestigious new building, set to open in 2025.
The total budget for the new building project is DKK 212.5 million, which is funded by the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation.
Event is an international agency based in London, and has worked on numerous heritage projects in Denmark. Its portfolio includes the Carl Nielsen Museum in Odense, ‘The Raid’ at the National Museum of Denmark, and Strandingsmuseum St. George in Thorsminde.
Peter C. Kjærgaard, director of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, says: “We are very happy to unveil who will take the exhibitions in our new museum building into the final and crucial phase. Event is one of the market’s most experienced companies with an impressive résumé”
Constellation of collaborators
Event will work with two Danish businesses to complete the project: Stouenborg, which specializes in AV, and lighting designer Steensen Varming.
Kerill Winters, head of exhibitions and interpretation at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, says: “This constellation of collaborators provides us with both high quality, sustainability in all solutions, and exceptionally good value for the project funds available for this phase of our exhibition project. All three companies have many years of experience in handling large and complex tasks, which is important as we enter the final part of a very long process.”
Tinker Imagineers, a Dutch exhibition designer, designed the creative concept for the new museum building’s displays. This concept must now be turned into production drawings for the firms to use for the manufacture and installation of the new displays.
Kjærgaard comments: “Event and the two Danish collaborative partners are also tasked with creating the last of the eight exhibitions that the new museum building will house: the Ocean Hall, which, with its white, luminous dome between the old buildings facing Sølvtorvet, will become iconic for Copenhagen.
The Ocean Hall
Event, Stouenborg, and Steensen Varming will work in partnership to develop the eighth and final exhibition space – the Ocean Hall. Situated between the historic buildings facing Sølvtorvet, this white, dazzling dome will become a landmark for Copenhagen.
“It is a very significant task that has to be overcome in the coming years. It has been important for us to choose companies that not only have good ideas but also have extensive and international experience in bringing them to life” adds Kjærgaard. “We are confident that we have found such collaborative partners.”
Jim Broughton, director of strategy, Event, says: “We’re honoured to be selected to work with the expert team at the Natural History Museum of Denmark in bringing these extraordinary concepts into fruition. This is a landmark project that is already the product of several years’ work by many creative minds, and we are looking forward to this collaboration immensely”
Event was recently shortlisted for the 2023 Design Week Awards for its exhibition design for the Burrell Collection, responsible for this project from developing the masterplan through to the exhibition design.
