Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, North Carolina, has announced a $5.2 million renovation project to modernise the building and exhibits.

Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is a unit of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.  The Morehead Building houses the GSK Fulldome Theater, as well as the Science Stage, exhibits, and Morehead classrooms as well as the UNC Morehead Observatory.

A launch event – #TakeUpSpace  – will be held on April 6th to unveil the plans to transform the Center into a modern-day, technology-advanced science hub.

In a statement Todd Boyette, Morehead’s director said, “Morehead will retain its majestic exterior, while inside, it will soon provide the kind of experiences visitors and students expect today.  The results will be transformative. We will be solidly positioned among America’s leading university-based science outreach centers. We are grateful to our generous partners who help Morehead.”

Renovation plans include moving the main entrance as well as creating:

  • a modern, reconfigured lobby space;
  • an exhibit hall to celebrate UNC’s history as a pioneer of science exploration;
  • an interactive “maker space”
  • an updated science demonstration stage and expanded galleries showcasing the advances researchers are making in science, health and technology.
