The Mall of America in Bloomington has opened a new interactive retailtainment art installation, Museum of Memories.

The Museum of Memories is an interactive playground that is inspired by childhood memories. It is a 4,600-square-foot space designed to create perfect photo opportunities that visitors can then upload to Instagram.

Visitors are given an hour to wonder through the space. Each room has hand painted murals and props that invoke childhood memories. Steffi Lynn Tsai is the artist behind The Museum of Memories. She wanted to create a space where people feel like they belong and can express themselves.

By tackling universal coming-of-age experiences, and combining art and creatvity, the museum creates an interactive, playful and nostalgic environment for visitors of all ages.

Retailtainment: Creating instagrammable opportunities

Rooms in the museum include a dreamy cloud room, a room with a colouring book and oversized crayons, rooms exploring childhood birthday parties and memories of watching cartoons on a Saturday morning. Each room provides the perfect backdrop for an Instagram post.

Many museums are creating spaces that encourage visitors to take photos and post them on social media. The Museum of Ice Cream opened a flagship attraction in New York in 2019. With a giant ball pit filled with spinkles, a hall of giant scoops of ice cream and more, visitors had plenty of ‘Instagramable’ moments.

Mall of America is owned by Triple Five, and is so large that visitors spend an average of 2.5 days on a stay there. This interactive museum is the latest retailtainment offering from the mall to encourage visitors to spend more time in the space.

The Museum of Memories will be open at Mall of America for a limited time during the summer. Tickets are $27 for adults and $22 for children aged 4-12. Tickets can be bought online or in person.
