The Rubell Museum has appointed former art dealer Caitlin Berry as the inaugural director of its new museum dedicated to contemporary art in Washington, DC.
Berry previously served as the director of the Cody Gallery at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. Prior to that, she was the director at Hemphill Fine Arts, a leading commercial gallery in Washington, DC.
“The Rubell Museum DC will exclusively focus on the art of today and invite the public to encounter new ideas inspired by the nuanced expressions and lived experiences of the artists on view,” Berry said in a statement (via The Art Newspaper).
“I look forward to expanding my work of fostering collaboration in the art ecosystem in DC and contributing to the dynamic cultural conversation that takes place here,” she added.
Berry is on the board of the Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art in Reston, Virginia. She is also a member of the Washington chapter of ArtTable.

“Caitlin’s knowledge and passion for the DC arts community make her the perfect partner for weaving the museum into the city and surrounding region,” said Mera Rubell.
“She is deeply committed both to artists and to making art accessible to a wide range of audiences, which is our goal in creating this museum,” Rubell added.
Upon opening in October 2022, the Rubell Museum DC will offer exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, videos and photographs from the Rubells’ collection. It will be home to more than 7,400 works.
The 32,000-square-foot institution will be located in the former Cardozo Elementary and later Randall Junior High School. It will also provide public programming, as well as a bookstore and cafe.
The Rubell Museum opened in Miami in December 2019. It first launched in 1993 as the Rubell Family Collection.
