Singapore's first Studio Ghibli exhibition gets opening date

New show includes theatrical sets and art installations

Singapore's first Studio Ghibli exhibition is opening at ArtScience Museumat the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort (IR) on 4 October.

Running until 2 February 2025, the ‘World of Studio Ghibli’ exhibition will celebrate the Japanese animation studio’s works. It is described as one of ArtScience Museum’s most ambitious exhibitions to date.


The large-scale show will include 11 galleries based on 11 Studio Ghibli films, like My Neighbour Totoro,Kiki’s Delivery Service,Howl’s Moving Castle,Princess Mononoke.

There will be theatrical sets and interactive art installations, and guests will meet some of their favourite Studio Ghibli characters.

The pop-up exhibition most recently took place in Thailand in 2023. It has also been in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Honor Harger, vice president of ArtScience Museum, said (via the Straits Times): “This is a true blockbuster that we have been trying to bring to Singapore for many years, and we are thrilled to be working directly with Studio Ghibli on making it happen.”

She said earlier this year: “Studio Ghiblihas created some of the most beloved and critically acclaimed animated films of all time. Their visually sumptuous films explore humanist topics like ecology and nature, and many feature diverse female characters who are strong, independent, complex, sensitively nuanced, and yet relatable.”

Studio Ghibli has also signed a deal with Chinese entertainment company Alibaba Pictures to launch animmersive exhibitionin Shanghai.

Meanwhile, the world's first Studio Ghibli theme park has opened Valley of Witches, it's fifth and final area. Ghibli Park is also home to Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse, Hill of Youth, Dondoko Forest, andMononoke Village.

In more news, Marina Bay Sands is to invest $750 million in the second phase of its redevelopment as it plans to become a world-class tourism destination.
