Expansion will increase gallery space at the Broad by 70 percent

The Broad in Los Angeles has announced a $100 million expansion. The museum will break ground on the new building in early 2025.

Founded in 2015 by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, the museum has “far exceeded its own projections”, says a press release. It regularly welcomes nearly four times more guests than originally expected.

To meet this demand, New York-based studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro has designed a new 55,000-square-foot building to rise behind the existing venue. The project is scheduled to break ground in early 2025.

The expansion will increase gallery space at the Broad by 70 percent. It includes two top-floor courtyards and new areas for live programming.

Additionally, there will be large new galleries on the first, second and third floors, as well as new spaces on the second floor, including an art storage experience featuring painting racks.

“In the brief period since 2015, our building has become an icon in Los Angeles’s cultural and civic landscape,” said Joanne Heyler, founding director and president of the Broad.

With the new building, the Broad will provide “surprising, welcoming and imaginative experiences that honor the diversity of our public”, Heyler added.

“With Joanne Heyler’s skilled leadership, the Broad museum has exceeded the expectations I shared with my late husband Eli, and it is time to set the museum on course for the future,” said Edythe Broad.

“The design for our expansion… creates new, beautiful spaces for art while preserving what already makes a visit to the Broad so special. I can’t imagine anyone else doing as good a job or caring quite as much.”

Elizabeth Diller, a partner of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, said: “I think of the new building as a companion to the existing Broad. The pair shares DNA, but each has its own distinct character and purpose in constant dialogue with its counterpart.”

The Broad’s new building will open to the public before Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The Broad’s collection includes more than 2,000 artworks from the 1950s to today.
