London’s Vagina Museum has launched a crowdfunding campaign while it looks for “the perfect new home” after being asked to leave the premises in Bethnal Green.

The world’s first museum dedicated to vaginas, vulvas and the gynaecological anatomy opened in east London in March 2022.

It made its debut in 2017 with pop-up exhibitions and events, before opening in Camden Market in 2019.

After closing in Bethnal Green in February, the museum is looking for a permanent venue in London and is hoping to raise £30,000 to help with moving expenses.

The funds may be used for renovations, deposits, and marketing, as well as running costs, consulting experts, training volunteers and making the space accessible.

“Every little helps, and what we raise from this campaign will go a long way to securing our dream home,” the museum writes on the fundraising page.

“If we raise less than £30,000 we’ll still be able to use these funds to help with our running costs, and if you’re generous enough that we raise more then they’ll go even further in helping us find and renovate our new home and exist whilst we do that,” it adds.

In Camden Market, the museum’s inaugural exhibition was titled ‘Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How to Fight Them’.

Its exhibitions in Bethnal Green were called ‘Periods: A Brief History’ and ‘From A to V’.

“Our new home needs to be in London, and must be wheelchair accessible as well as being affordable to a small, grassroots organisation,” the museum’s fundraising page says.

“Such sites are rare, which is why we need all the help that we can get. Any excess funds from this campaign will be spent on making the most of our new space and programmes!”

Elsewhere, the Museum of Sex is opening its latest and largest outpost in Miami, Florida in spring 2023.

At the time of writing, the Vagina Museum has raised £5,416.
