Ocean Park Hong Kong has revealed that its Water World attraction is underperforming, and could be shut down.

Paulo Pong, chairman of Ocean Park Corporation, told RTHK that Water World's "numbers are still lower than we had hoped".

Pong's comments come after Ocean Park announced its financial results for the fiscal year ended 30 June 2025.

The park reported its fourth consecutive year of attendance and revenue growth, the latter increasing by 9 percent year-on-year.

However, Water World recorded a deficit from operations of HK$148.3 million, with Ocean Park's total deficit increasing to HK$274.7m.

Pong told the publication the theme park will need to discuss its plans for Water World with its stakeholders, and said he is not ruling out the possibility that Water World could be closed.

"Initially, the idea was to be open all year round. However, after two years, we discovered that the number of visitors in winter was not ideal," he said.

Steps to reduce expenses at Ocean Park

"In order to save costs, the facility was closed in winter in both 2024 and 2025. We're doing the same now, closing on October 15 and hoping to reopen in May.

"This is one of the steps we have taken to reduce expenses."

In a statement alongside Ocean Park's latest financial results, Pong said the company "achieved significant breakthroughs in operations, conservation and education".

Pong also referred to Ocean Park's expanded giant panda family, which is driving attendance, boosting revenue, and highlighting the park's conservation efforts.

"The presence of six giant pandas of three generations has not only amplified our conservation and education efforts and empowered us to connect with a broader audience, but it also creates unprecedented opportunities for business growth," he said.

Ocean Park Corporation's "steady enhancement in operating performance enables us to dedicate resources to advancing vital conservation and education initiatives for society and nurturing future generations", he added.
