Regina Mossotti

Vice President of Animal Care

Saint Louis Zoo

Regina Mossotti, vice president of animal care at the Saint Louis Zoo, is a leader in endangered species recovery, animal welfare and wildlife conservation.

With a background in field research, including work with the Yellowstone Wolf Project and mountain lion tracking, she brings extensive scientific expertise to the management of animal care and conservation programmes.

Mossotti plays a leading role in several major North American species recovery initiatives. As programme leader for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Red Wolf SAFE programme, a member of the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Red Wolf Recovery Team, and the FWS Mexican Wolf SAFE pup foster coordinator, she contributes to efforts to protect genetically vulnerable populations and support the reintroduction of endangered wolves into the wild.

At the Saint Louis Zoo, Mossotti champions an approach that combines high standards of animal welfare with advances in reproductive science and conservation.

This includes the zoo’s historic first Asian elephant calf conceived through artificial insemination, demonstrating the role of innovative techniques in supporting threatened species.

Alongside her work in animal care and recovery programmes, Mossotti is committed to science communication and public education. By connecting research, responsible animal management and field conservation, she helps advance understanding of endangered wildlife and the collaborative efforts needed to secure its future.
