Join us online on Tuesday, 13 May at 12:30pm BST for The future of aviation – will sustainability ground business travel?

Business travel has a huge environmental footprint, as anyone calculating their carbon footprint knows. But travelling to meet in person and attend trade shows can be seen as a non-negotiable part of doing business today. Although online meeting alternatives accelerated their evolution during COVID, many of us are back to our pre-2020 air miles.

It can be hard to see how to reduce what’s viewed as a vital part of doing business. And a reticence to face up to the carbon cost of travel can prevent companies even starting to look at their carbon footprints.

Will innovations in aviation save business travel, or must we all stop flying now?

The sustainable future of aviation

Christopher Surgenor, a key figure in the aviation industry’s move towards sustainability, will join us at greenloop. As the Programme Director for Aviation Carbon Events and the Editor and Publisher of GreenAir News, he is at the forefront of discussions and solutions aimed at reducing the sector’s carbon footprint. His expertise spans critical areas such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), carbon markets, and the overarching goal of decarbonizing the aviation industry.

Surgenor plays a leading role in convening global experts through events like the annual Aviation Carbon conference. This conference, scheduled for November 24-26, 2025, in London Heathrow, serves as a crucial platform for stakeholders to address the industry’s climate challenges, discuss pathways to meet emissions targets, and foster a transition towards a more sustainable future.

Around 2.4% of global CO2 emissions come from aviation. Together with other gases and the water vapour trails produced by aircraft, the industry is responsible for around 5% of global warming. But, only 4% of the world’s population have flown internationally, and only 1% of people are frequent flyers.

However, the aviation industry has set ambitious targets for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, and there is significant innovation around sustainable fuels, electric aircraft and flight operations.
