greenloop: Net zero & carbon offsetting – how to keep things simple

News
Danny Chivers at greenloop - Sustainability Advisor to the Gallery Climate Coalition

A no-nonsense guide to climate action.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the plethora of carbon measurement tools, offsetting options, jargon and advisors then you need to come to this session!

Commonly-used climate interventions like Net Zero targets, carbon credits and tree planting seem to be coming under attack from all sides. It can be increasingly difficult to know what to do, and demoralising for organisations that adopted net zero targets and an offsetting regime with the best intentions, only to find these practices immersed in problems and controversy.

In this session Danny Chivers will demystify the jargon and set out the simple climate actions we should take to give us back control and a sense of shared purpose. A key takeaway will be learning how to work with existing carbon reduction/net zero targets or set new ones, and how to create your own ‘Strategic Climate Fund’.

This is a no-nonsense, empowering guide to what to do!

Strategic Climate Funds

Danny Chivers is a freelance carbon analyst and climate action consultant. For nearly 20 years, he has provided environmental guidance to a wide range of organisations, specialising in international humanitarian charities and the culture sector.

He is Sustainability Advisor to the Gallery Climate Coalition, supporting over 1500 arts organisations to halve their carbon emissions by 2030. He was Environmental Advisor to the Hybrid Futures project (2023 – 2024), supporting a collective of museums and galleries in the North of England to collaborate on a series of sustainability-themed exhibitions. He writes a regular climate column for New Internationalist Magazine, and is the author of “The No-Nonsense Guide to Climate Change” and “No-Nonsense Renewable Energy”.

His recent work with the Gallery Climate Coalition includes the development of Strategic Climate Funds (SCFs). As an alternative to carbon offsets, an SCF allows organisations to ethically finance effective climate action, without the problems associated with conventional offsetting practices.

The GCC says, “unlike offsets, SCFs are designed to encourage action and tangible results in the near term, incentivise transparency and accountability, and, crucially, do not allow for misleading ‘net zero’ or ‘carbon neutral’ claims. This approach is in line with the position taken by an increasing number of environmental organisations, backed by a growing body of evidence.”

Driven by a mission to lessen the environmental impact of the arts, the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) unites international arts organisations, including museums and their suppliers, in taking climate action. The GCC is working to achieve a minimum 50% cut in the sector’s CO2e emissions by 2030 and advocate for zero waste. Through sharing best practices, providing sector-specific environmental leadership, and leveraging our collective strength, the GCC aims to create meaningful systemic change. As a registered charity, the GCC operates on voluntary donations, ensuring free access to tools and resources, including a carbon calculator and the newly established Strategic Climate Fund initiative.

The GCC carbon calculator is sponsored by the Getty. GCC members include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Design Museum, Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA) and Horniman Museums and Gardens.
