The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) has announced the release of the Global Experience Index, which shows stable, growing markets worldwide for theme parks, water parks, and museums in 2024.

The global attractions scene returned to stable growth in 2024, as travel and tourism trends settled at roughly pre-pandemic levels. The combined attendance of the top 25 theme parks worldwide increased by 2.4% in 2024 to nearly 246 million.

Parks and museums in China see record attendance

Generally, the top parks in mature markets such as the US, Japan, and Western Europe experienced little to moderate changes in attendance. Meanwhile, leading internationally branded parks in China continued to grow significantly and achieved record-breaking years.

The world’s leading water parks experienced a less than 1% rise in overall attendance, with results differing significantly across regions, largely influenced by local market factors such as weather and tourism.

Regarding museums, China sustained its swift ascent as a leading global player, with 14 of the top 20 museums now based in China. The country's focus on investing in cultural institutions like museums, along with affordable entry fees and its large population centres, has significantly driven this major market shift.

The most visited

The world's most visited theme park was Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida, followed by Disneyland Park and Disneyland Resort in California, and then Universal Studios Japan in Osaka.

When it comes to water parks, Chimelong Water Park in Guangzhou, China, took the top spot, with Aquaventure World Dubai in the UAE coming second and Therme Erding in Germany taking third.

For museums, France's Louvre has been knocked off the top spot by three Chinese museums: the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum in Chengdu, and Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum in Xi'an.

Details of these dynamics and more can be found in the 2024 TEA Global Experience Index, presented in partnership with Storyland Studios, a global experience design and strategy firm.

The index, now in its 19th edition, is a comprehensive resource providing attendance data for the world’s top theme parks, water parks, and museums.

The study is a collaboration between the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA), Entertainment + Culture Advisors (ECA), and The Park Database (TPDB).
