Mountaintop spectacular uses Crimson Series projectors to take visitors on an immersive journey through Taoist culture

Christie, the global visual and audio technology company, has shared how its Crimson Series 3DLP laser projectors have been used in a captivating projection mapping display at the Golden Summit complex at Mount Laojun in China.

The 2,184-metre (7,165-foot) high mountain in Luanchuan County, Henan Province is a renowned Taoist sanctuary. It welcomes countless pilgrims and tourists annually, who visit for its spectacular scenery and magnificent temple complex.

The new lighting project for the Golden Summit redefines the boundaries of cultural storytelling and projection technology, taking visitors on an immersive journey through a millennium of Taoist culture.

Vibrant projection in a challenging environment

The project aims to support economic growth in the region while safeguarding its cultural heritage, providing a platform for cultural exchange that enhances appreciation and understanding of traditional customs. It was led by Beijing Zhongqing Display Technology, which managed project planning and construction, and used six Christie Crimson WU32 laser projectors.

Yangshun Jia, project manager, Beijing Zhongqing, says: “The Christie Crimson WU32 projectors were selected for their remarkable 32,000-lumen output, presenting vivid and clear visuals even in challenging conditions.

“With their rugged yet compact design and exceptional image fidelity, these projectors deliver vibrant, accurate colors, bringing the Golden Summit’s architectural details, swirling mountain mists, Taoist symbols, and dynamic light and shadow transitions to life in stunning detail.”

The mountainous environment of Mount Laojun presented challenges for the Beijing Zhongqing team and required innovative solutions.

Bespoke enclosures were used to protect the projectors from environmental factors, such as extreme temperatures and humidity, while the complex, irregular landscape demanded precise planning and installation techniques to achieve optimal projection quality.

Additionally, Beijing Zhongqing worked with Goldon Digital Creative to develop Knowing Mount Laojun, a music and dance performance presented at the Golden Summit. The show used 12 Christie DWU1082-GS laser projectors to produce outstanding visual effects, enhancing spectators’ immersion in the cultural and artistic spectacular.

“Modern technology & timeless culture”

“From conception to execution, the projection mapping atop the Golden Summit of Mount Laojun has been hailed as a triumph by various stakeholders, with seamless coordination between lighting, sound, and projection systems delivering an unforgettable show,” says Jia.

“The integration of modern technology and timeless culture continues to captivate audiences, demonstrating how projection technology can elevate storytelling while driving economic and cultural development.”

April Qin, senior sales director for China, Enterprise, Christie, says: “We’re proud to see Christie technology bringing stories to life at Mount Laojun, known as the retreat of Laozi, founder of Taoism. The Crimson WU32 projectors’ ability to combine technical excellence with cultural storytelling exemplifies our commitment to enabling creative and immersive experiences to audiences across China.”

The Christie Crimson Series features an IP5X-sealed, solid-state laser light source housed in a robust and compact chassis which guarantees years of reliable operation with minimal maintenance.

The projector uses Christie TruLife electronics for ultra-fast processing and is fully compatible with the optional Christie Mystique automated camera-based alignment software, ensuring smooth maintenance of multi-projection systems. By blending reliable performance with ease of use, it offers an excellent solution for demanding large-venue events and applications.

Last month, Christie launched the Sapphire 4K40-RGBH projector. As the world’s first high-brightness hybrid RGB laser projector, this technology offers maximum flexibility in its combination of solid-state RGB pure laser illumination with a dual laser phosphor system.
