Chinese literary masterpiece has inspired the theatrical park, which integrates visual technologies into live performances

Christie, the global visual and audio technology company, has revealed that over 80 of its HS, GS and Inspire Series 1DLP laser projectors are being used to create impressive visuals at a theatrical park inspired by the classic Chinese novel, Dream of the Red Mansions.

The attraction in Langfang, Hebei province, named Unique Dream of Red Mansions, spans 150,000 square metres and includes five theatres, 108 scenario areas, and outdoor theatre spaces. It is a centrepiece of the Dream Langfang Theme Park, an ambitious development which took eight years to create.

All performances in the Unique Dream of Red Mansions are directed by Chaoge Wang. Her highly regarded influential scenario performances and theatrical works have helped to develop tourism across numerous regions.

Creating a dreamlike atmosphere

With this project, the producers aimed to bring the literary masterpiece to a younger audience and enhance the theatrical experience. To achieve these objectives, they skillfully incorporated visual technologies into live performances, creating a remarkably engaging and immersive atmosphere.

Christie’s partner, Beijing Zhongqing Display Technology, led the technological enhancement and delivered projections across four performance venues. A total of 84 projectors, including the HS Series DWU1612-HS, GS Series DWU1082-GS and DWU1400-GS, and the Inspire Series DWU860-iS, were deployed at Beidamen Light Show, Dream of the Red Mansions Chapter 33, Youhaiwu Theatre, and Theatre of Beds.

Qing Zhu, general manager, Beijing Zhongqing Display Technology, comments: “The ‘Unique Dream of Red Mansions’ park stands as China’s inaugural attraction inspired by a literary masterpiece. For this monumental project, we selected the Christie HS, GS, and Inspire Series laser projectors based on their robust quality, reliability and exceptional color performance demonstrated in prior installations.

“Despite navigating challenges such as pandemic lockdowns, the two-year installation journey culminated in results that we take great pride in. The projections have successfully captured the dreamlike and illusory essence of this classic novel.”

Innovation & excellence

A key feature of the theatrical park is the Beidamen Light Show, an outdoor projection mapping spectacular which uses 64 Christie DWU860-iS projectors. In this display, a large outdoor courtyard features 16 ancient-style gates which are brought to life with captivating images.

The Youhaiwu Theatre offers a mesmerising one-hour live production featuring a talented cast, beautiful sets, and 36 intricately carved wooden doors. 15 Christie DWU1082-GS projectors provide vivid projections on the floor and screens surrounding the stage, enhancing the experience. This acclaimed performance is the most popular attraction at the Unique Dream of Red Mansions park.

In the Dream of the Red Mansions Chapter 33 theatre, guests can enjoy an exciting performance of one of the novel’s best-known scenes. The story is presented on an enormous curved screen using three Christie DWU1400-GS projectors to create an immersive experience.

In addition, the Theatre of Beds offers an experimental approach by allowing audience members to relax on beds and interact with lifelike images shown on a huge, tilted screen which utilises two Christie DWU1612-GS projectors.

April Qin, senior sales director for China, Enterprise, Christie, says: “As a company dedicated to delivering unparalleled visual experiences, the major installation at the ‘Unique Dream of Red Mansions’ park stands as a testament to Christie’s commitment to innovation and excellence.

“Our projection solutions, including the HS, GS, and Inspire Series, have embraced the aesthetic and philosophical essence of this Chinese literary masterpiece, delighting audiences and redefining the boundaries of immersive storytelling.”

Last month, Christie announced that it has illuminated the immersive displays at Museum X. This impressive exhibition space, known as an “immersive new media playground”, uses Christie’s HS Series and Inspire Series 1DLP laser projectors.
