The Walt Disney Company has extended its ambitious environmental reporting goals to include Scope 3 emissions. What are Scope 3 emissions?

Company greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fall into three categories: Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3.

Disney scope 1,2 and 3 emissionsThe Walt Disney Company

Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from operations and vehicle fuel consumption. Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from purchased electricity.

Scope 3 includes all other indirect sources of emissions that are within a company’s value chain. In order to measure them you need to understand the emissions of your suppliers of goods and services, materials, transport.

Whereas Carbon Neutral status only requires the reduction and offset of Scope 1 and 2 emissions, Net Zero and Science-Based Targets cover Scope 1,2 and 3 emissions.

80% of suppliers by 2027 ...

disney science based targets suppliers greenloop

Although this may sound very technical and dry, this really matters for any company that wants to work with Disney as a supplier.

It's not clear from the White Paper exactly which supplies will be subject to their specific reduction targets, but Disney does speak extensively of supplier engagement:

"We commit that 80% of our suppliers, measured by emissions, will have Science-Based targets, as defined by the SBTi, by fiscal year 2027, within the following Scope 3 categories:

- Specific franchises related to licensed consumer products and

Tokyo Disney Resort;

- Specific purchased goods and services related to our external services; and

- Specific upstream transportation and distribution related to

our streaming business."

Disney is looking to collaborate with suppliers to help them measure and reduce emissions. It seems clear that suppliers who are already doing this will be at a competitive advantage:

"We will collaborate with our suppliers, contractors and licensees to help them build capacity to set their own emissions reduction targets ... Additionally, we will focus our attention on industry collaborations, active engagement with our suppliers and partners, and investments in innovative strategies for emissions reductions."
