SeaWorld San Diego has been cleared by local officials to reopen its zoo areas under state guidance, as zoos are now allowed to operate in California.

SeaWorld San Diego therefore opens ahead of Disneyland and other theme parks in California. However, it can only reopen outdoor areas, keeping indoor aquariums, rides and attractions closed (via OC Register).

“SeaWorld can open under state guidance for zoos,” said San Diego County spokesperson Tegan Glasheen. “Under that guidance, it can open outdoor areas, but needs to keep indoor aquariums and rides closed.”

SeaWorld San Diego is allowed to reopen immediately, providing it follows guidance from the state and shares a safe reopening plan, said Glasheen.

SeaWorld San Diego is yet to confirm a reopening, but posted a video to Facebook with the caption: “Big news coming soon, stay tuned!”

According to Theme Park Insider, full-time SeaWorld San Diego employees have started receiving recall-to-work notices.

SeaWorld previously reported its financial results for the second quarter and first six months of fiscal year 2020, also confirming delays to coasters and providing an update on seasonal events.

Some theme parks in the state have reopened without certain attractions. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom reopened with the Marine World Experience, while Knott’s Berry Farm reopened with F&B events.

However, Cedar Fair recently announced that California’s Great America will remain closed for the rest of the year, making it the first theme park to cancel reopening plans for 2020 in California.

Disneyland remains closed to the public, but Marvel fans have been treated to a look at the attraction’s latest themed land, Avengers Campus.

As construction work is allowed to restart across the state of California, Disneyland is putting the finishing touches to Avengers Campus, which was set to open in July.
