London 2012’s first sustainability partner aims to inspire Britons to live a lower carbon lifestyle

Before sunrise the iconic EDF Energy London Eye will cast a brilliant light across London to symbolise a low carbon vision for the Capital and beyond. It marks the launch of EDF Energy’s three-year partnership with Merlin Entertainments’ (Merlin) iconic attraction – the London Eye.

This symbolic sunrise aims to inspire Britons to take action against climate change and sign up to Team Green Britain (teamgreenbritain.org), a growing movement of people, schools and communities who are offered ongoing information about how to tackle climate change. Joining the team at the London Eye will be TV presenter Myleene Klass who has pledged to live a more sustainable lifestyle in the future.

As well as using its expertise as Britain’s largest producer of low carbon electricity to help Merlin reduce the London Eye’s overall carbon footprint, EDF Energy will guarantee that every single unit of energy used by the EDF Energy London Eye is matched with energy generated from low carbon sources.  As the first Sustainability Partner of London 2012, EDF Energy is also providing innovative, low carbon solutions for the Games including powering the Olympic Park during Games-time and the building of the site’s substation from sustainable materials.

In the run-up to 2012, EDF Energy is encouraging people and businesses across Britain to follow the lead of the London Eye, London 2012, and other major landmarks across the capital such as City Hall, Tate Modern, St Paul’s Cathedral, to back a low carbon vision for London by signing up to Team Green Britain.

Vincent de Rivaz, Chief Executive at EDF Energy said “As Britain’s largest producer of low carbon electricity, EDF Energy is leading the energy change. We are working with Government, transport providers, attractions, business and institutions to help create a city, and country that’s more sustainable and enjoyable for visitors and residents alike.

Our partnership with Merlin and the London Eye – which is recognised around the globe – will be a powerful way to help EDF Energy communicate our vision of a low carbon future. We hope today’s symbolic sunrise will inspire people to join us on the journey to a truly low carbon Britain by signing up to Team Green Britain”.

Commenting Nick Varney, CEO of Merlin Entertainments said:   ‘We are proud to be involved in this initiative, and to have the opportunity to work with EDF to help make the London Eye, and London itself, more sustainable and environmentally responsible in the future.   This is exactly the sort of additional benefit and expertise we were seeking when we were considering the merits of working with a partner.  The London Eye is a unique attraction and a contemporary icon of London and the UK so there can be no better way for EDF Energy to get this important message across.

Myleene Klass added “It was incredibly exciting to stand on the riverbank this morning and watch the sky light up in a powerful symbol to inspire us all to think about our own carbon footprint.  As a mum who is expecting my second child, it really makes sustainability issues hit home.  I want to do my part as part of EDF Energy’s Team Green Britain to tackle climate change and protect the planet for my children and future generations.”
