The fourth annual British Tourism Week (BTW) takes place from 15 – 21 March 2010 and to show it’s support the Spinnaker Tower will be lighting up in red, white and blue on Monday 15 March to celebrate the week long events taking place across the country.

The Tower will take on a unique and new look as it rotates it’s colours every few seconds between the 3 colours making a truly wonderful illumination.  His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales will once again be Patron for this series of inter-related events, which aims to raise local, regional, national and international awareness of the size, value and importance of Britain’s £114 billion visitor economy.

BTW 2009 saw over 230 events take place across the country, culminating with the inaugural Best of Britain & Ireland Travel Trade Forum (formerly the British Travel Trade Fair) and a new two-day consumer show. Building upon this success, British Tourism Week 2010 will highlight the contribution made by businesses large and small, public and commercial, and aims to galvanise the commitment of organisations and individuals to further improve and develop the industry.

The lighting of the Spinnaker Tower is one of many events taking place across the country which includes the illuminating of Hadrian’s Wall in the north of the country spanning the 84 mile long Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail.

Paul Mahy, Commercial Manager at the Tower, commented, “It’s great that we can show our support for the British Tourism Week.  The fact that so many showcase events are happening across the country for British tourism is fantastic, and we look forward to lighting the Tower up in the colours of the Union Jack.  The Tower plays an important role in helping the local economy by attracting visitors from across the world and it’s important to showcase as an industry what tourism has to offer.  In addition, we also appreciate how important local residents are to us which is why we offer a resident’s discount for all those in Portsmouth and Gosport postcodes.”

Spinnaker Tower will be lit on the evening of Monday 15th March in red, white and blue, rotating between the 3 colours every few seconds, to reflect the colours of the Union Jack.

The Spinnaker Tower is open daily from 10.00am (excluding Christmas Day).  See www.spinnakertower.co.uk or call 02392 857520 to book in advance or to find out more!
