Universal Studios Japan has announced it will permanently close its Sesame Street-themed area to make way for new experiences.

Sesame Street Fun World, part of the family-friendly Universal Wonderland area at Universal Studios Japan, will close on 10 May.

The closure will "pave the way for new and even more exciting experiences with the Sesame Street friends", Universal Studios Japan said in a press release.

Opened in 2012, Sesame Street Fun World is the largest of three sub-areas in Universal Wonderland, alongside Snoopy Studios and Hello Kitty Fashion Avenue.

It includes rides, attractions and play experiences inspired by characters including Elmo, Big Bird, the Cookie Monster and Abby Cadabby.

To mark the area's closure, Universal Studios Japan will host a special event called 'Forever Friends – Always Together' from 20 March through 10 May.

The park's other Sesame Street experiences will continue, including the 'No Limit! Discover U!!!' parade, the Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic attraction, the 'Ultimate Blues Bash – Colors of Music' experience, and various character greetings.

In more news for Sesame Street fans, Sesame Place San Diego recently transitioned to a seasonal schedule.

Sesame Place San Diego opened in 2022 as the second Sesame Place theme park in the US, after the first location in Philadelphia.

The 17-acre park is home to family rides, water attractions, live character shows, parades, and interactive experiences.

Back at Universal Studios Japan, the theme park has revealed plans for new Pokémon experiences, which will then be introduced to Universal's parks across the world.
