Therme Manchester will be the UK’s first urban wellbeing resort

Therme Group has submitted a planning application for its new design for Therme Manchester, a £250 million water park and wellbeing resort.

Billed as the UK’s first urban wellbeing resort, Therme Manchester will be home to saunas, an indoor beach, a water park, mineral pools, botanical gardens, a spa, massage beds, a vertical farm, beehives, a rooftop garden and restaurants.

The new plans have been submitted to Trafford Council after a public consultation. Therme Group said in a press release that 91 percent of people said the new design is even more impressive than the original.

As previously reported, Therme Manchester has made several improvements to its design, and has changed it from a single building with zones to a pavilion-style concept with separate but connected structures.

Therme Group is partnering with London-based architectural and design practice Fletcher Priest, which is serving as the collaborating architect. Gross Max, an Edinburgh-based firm, is responsible for the project’s landscape design.

The new design includes three entrances to welcome guests arriving from all directions, with enhanced access for cyclists and pedestrians using public transport. For those arriving by car, there will be landscaped green boulevard.

In addition, Therme Manchester’s new parking arrangements are integrated into the natural environment, with the roof serving as an outdoor terrace with views of the Bridgewater Canal.

The creation of a new link to the Bridgewater Canal will improve the connection between Therme Manchester and the city centre. The new plans also include an urban wellbeing garden, inspired by an English meadow.

Pending planning approval, construction on Therme Manchester is due to start later this year. It will take around 24 months to complete.

Stelian Iacob, senior VP of Therme Group and CEO of Therme Group UK, previously said the resort “will have a transformative impact on the city and individuals”.

“The Therme experience is designed around physical and mental wellbeing,” Iacob added. “Human contact with water, steam, fresh air and nature is optimised in an environment that sets itself apart from the pressures of daily metropolitan life.”
