More engaging and accessible entrance set to open in 2023

PGAV Destinations, a global leader in the planning and design of unique destinations, has been working with San Antonio Zoo to create a more immersive, accessible and efficient entrance. The project, which is the first phase of the zoo’s long-term master plan and $200 million vision for the next ten years, began in summer 2021. It is expected to open in mid-2023.

The design for the new entrance, called Zoo Celebración, features a new mercado-style plaza with dynamic sculptures that celebrate the city and its culture. There are also plans to include murals and artwork by local artists.

The plaza covers around 1.5 acres and will provide an enhanced visitor experience, thanks to a new entry building, food service, rentals and guest facilities, as well as electronic ticketing kiosks and a designated group entrance.

An inviting new entrance

“In a collaborative effort with the zoo team, we have completely reimagined the entrance of the zoo, creating an inviting and exciting sense of arrival for the guests. Not only are we bringing better functionality to the entry, but we are also celebrating the people and culture of San Antonio and the animals who live throughout the zoo,” says PGAV Destinations project architect, Andrew Schumacher.

“Additionally, this new vision for the entry will equip the zoo for continued future growth.”

The colourful entrance area is overlooked by open-air event spaces as well as a tower featuring sculpted butterflies. The project will also see the zoo’s historic Monkey House being transformed to include new visitor facilities, for example, a cafe, restrooms and stroller rentals, while also preserving its character in line with guidelines from the San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation.

“The current entrance was built in the 1950s, and it is long overdue for a makeover. Our goal is to create a sense of awe and wonder when our guests arrive, welcome them efficiently, and make a statement that this is San Antonio,” says San Antonio Zoo president and CEO, Tim Morrow.

Last month, PGAV Destinations also announced that it has developed a new interactive online experience for Build-A-Bear.
