WAZA opens registrations for first Mid-Year Meeting

News
WAZA mid year meeting

Inaugural edition of the online event will take place on 24 & 25 July 2024

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), the global alliance of regional associations, national federations and institutions, has revealed that its first Mid-Year Meeting is set to take place online from 24 to 25 July.

This landmark event will bring together leaders, experts, and stakeholders from throughout the international zoo and aquarium community to address critical issues, share information, and plan for the future.

Registration for the free event is now open.

Encouraging meaningful discussions

The association says: “The aim of this meeting is to encourage participation from our diverse membership, to engage with them more fully and to provide a platform for meaningful discussions and exchange.”

To meet this objective, the meeting will take place over two hours on each of its two days. It will be scheduled to take place in several time zones to enable more of the association’s global membership to attend.

WAZA has released a preliminary programme for the meeting, which includes sessions on its vision and strategic priorities, success stories from its members, panel discussions, workshops, and more. The full schedule is currently being curated and will be released in the coming weeks.

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) recently shared its insights into the COP28, which took place from 30 November to 12 December 2023 in Dubai.

Climate change and biodiversity are interconnected. Ecosystems (and the biodiversity within them) are natural carbon sinks that offer nature-based solutions to climate change. Meanwhile, climate change creates direct or indirect risks to the survival of numerous species.

WAZA commented that its “members have the potential to play a crucial role in working towards the goal of arresting climate change and working towards the goal of reducing their emissions.”

In addition, last year WAZA announced that it has extended the availability of PalmOil Scan to New Zealand and Australia. The extension was unveiled by the WAZA Palm Oil Subcommittee and member institutions, Auckland Zoo (representing New Zealand) and Zoos South Australia (representing Australia).
