WAZA x RtR Short Guide

New publication will help zoos and aquariums learn how to get involved with the conservation project

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), the global alliance of regional associations, national federations and institutions, has announced the release of The WAZA x RtR Short Guide: How your Zoo or Aquarium Can Join Reverse the Red and Halt Biodiversity Decline.

This has been developed to help zoos and aquariums better understand how they can get involved with the Reverse the Red project, contribute to species conservation, and make the most of the unique skills and reach of the zoo and aquarium community.

Zoos and aquariums have a vital part to play

“Zoos and aquariums have a vital role to play in addressing the decline of biodiversity and safeguarding endangered species,” says a statement from WAZA. “Recognising the urgency of this issue, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission (IUCN SSC) and other partners jointly launched Reverse the Red (RtR), a movement to inspire action and spread optimism for species conservation.”

The Short Guide presents a number of success stories that demonstrate how WAZA Members have already taken the initiative to stop the reduction in biodiversity, while also outlining the movement’s principles and links to other relevant conservation resources.

Those within the zoo and aquarium sector are invited to study this manual and consider how their institution can join these WAZA members in promoting Reverse the Red.

The 78th WAZA Annual Conference has been taking place this week, hosted by San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA). Earlier this year, the organisation revealed that Taronga Zoo, Sydney will host the 79th Annual WAZA Conference from 3-7 November 2024. It also recently unveiled a new strategy and vision as it seeks to better support its members.
