Overview:

Hololabs Studio is a Canadian creative technology company specialising in interactive experiences for theme parks, visitor attractions, museums and location-based entertainment. Based in Victoria, British Columbia, the studio combines game development, experience design and engineering to turn creative concepts into reliable physical-world installations. Its work spans augmented and virtual reality, interactive media, real-time rendering, motion tracking and multiplayer gameplay. The team has been developing real-time experiences for more than 15 years.

Technology designed for physical attractions

Hololabs supports projects from early concepts and prototypes through to software development, systems integration and deployment. Its team connects digital content with ride systems, projection, audio, lighting, practical effects and physical show sets. This combination of creative and technical capabilities allows the studio to address the less visible requirements of an attraction, including synchronised events, distributed rendering, operational software, remote monitoring and ongoing content updates.

The company also creates mixed-reality attractions that combine AR or VR with projection and motion tracking. Other capabilities include free-roam multiplayer VR, interactive walls, mobile-connected installations and sensor-driven exhibits for permanent or touring use.

Interactive media for major theme park projects

Hololabs contributed gameplay, interactive media and elements of the technical architecture for Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge at Universal Studios Japan. Its work included real-time messaging, synchronised show events, distributed rendering and the integration of game content with projection, audio, lighting and special effects. The team also developed software to deploy and monitor the experience across hundreds of computers.

For the Epic Universe Preview Center, Hololabs helped develop a mobile application and augmented reality experience. Digital characters, animation and interactive content were positioned over a detailed physical model, allowing visitors to explore the park’s themed lands through their own devices

Hololabs

Free-roam VR and location-based entertainment

Hololabs applies its video game background to social, multiplayer experiences designed for commercial venues. Its free-roam title Abyss: Vault is a cooperative science-fiction adventure for two to six players, using a 6-metre by 6-metre play area and a 30-minute format. The experience is available through location-based VR platforms and operators across Europe and North America.

The studio also develops custom prototypes for concepts that do not fit established attraction formats, helping clients test gameplay, spatial design and audience interaction before moving into full production.

Interactive exhibits and public installations

Museum, gallery and public-realm projects form another part of Hololabs’ portfolio. The Education of Ursula transforms an artificial intelligence character into a conversational exhibit that explores possible futures through play. Meanwhile, Glowshrooms enables visitors to control large-scale projected artwork through their phones, movement and sound.

These projects demonstrate how Hololabs uses technology as part of the visitor experience rather than as a standalone feature, combining storytelling, participation and robust engineering for repeat public use.
