Art collective teamLab and Saudi Arabia‘s culture ministry have announced construction on the new teamLab Borderless site in Jeddah is progressing.

teamLab’s first-ever Borderless museum in the Middle East is located in Jeddah’s historic district. It will exhibit more than 50 experiential artworks created by teamLab using digital technology and span around 10,000 square metres of gross floor area.

Via a press release, the upcoming museum is “making steady progress in development towards completion”. It is being built on the shores of Arbaeen Lagoon in downtown Jeddah.

teamLab Borderless is a world of artworks without boundaries. Artworks move out of rooms and communicate with each other to form one borderless space.

When teamLab Borderless first opened in Tokyo in June 2018, it welcomed more than 2.3 million annual visitors, setting the world record for the most visited museum by a single art group.

Earlier this year, teamLab Borderless reopened in a new home in Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills complex.

“We wanted to create a physical, spatial art that expands infinitely, where people walk around with intention; a physical art that becomes one with the body, changes through the presence of people; where the artwork world is continuous with the body,” said teamLab founder Toshiyuki Inoko. “That is the foundation of teamLab Borderless.”

The new teamLab Borderless in Jeddah is part of Saudi Arabia’s investment in attractions and entertainment experiences to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on oil.

Elsewhere, the new teamLab Phenomena in Abu Dhabi is now 70 percent completed.

Jonathan Brown, chief portfolio officer of Miral, said the new attraction will “provide a captivating cultural journey that brings a new realm of educational exploration and creative discovery to the emirate”.

“The curated, experiential space will add yet another outstanding experience to Miral’s portfolio of world-class experiences and attractions, appealing to visitors from across the globe,” he added.
