The Louvre museum in Paris is experiencing another setback as a water leak has caused damage to a 19th-century ceiling painting.

Water damage was discovered in room 707, also known as the "Duchâtel" room, in the Denon wing late on Thursday (12 February).

The leak from a heating pipe was stopped shortly after midnight, and the only painting damaged was Charles Meynier's The Apotheosis of Poussin, Le Sueur and Le Brun.

The Louvre said firefighters responded "immediately" and the leak was stopped 40 minutes after it started, the BBC reports.

A painting restorer has inspected Meynier's artwork, and found it had "two tears in the same area, caused by the water, and the paint layer on the ceiling and its arches has lifted".

The cost of the damage to the ceiling painting and the building is unclear.

The latest disruption at the Louvre came a day after French police reportedly detained nine people, including two museum staff and several tour guides, over a suspected ticket fraud plot.

The alleged operation is believed to have defrauded the museum of more than €10 million (£8.7m) over the past 10 years.

The last year has been challenging for the Louvre. In October, jewels valued at €88m were stolen from the institution.

In addition to the robbery, a water leak in November damaged hundreds of items in the museum's Egyptian department, and a gallery of nine rooms was later closed due to ceiling safety issues.

Employees at the institution have been taking strike action, demanding building maintenance and staffing increases, and protesting against a rise in ticket prices for most non-EU visitors.

On the Louvre's website today (16 February), it says the museum is open.

"However, due to public strikes, some exhibition rooms will remain closed", it adds.
