Visitors to UK city will see space in a whole new light with AI-generated projections

Barco, the technology company focusing on innovative visualization solutions, has been chosen as a technology partner for a new museum in Coventry, UK.

The city’s Reel Store experience will open in the former offices of Coventry Evening Telegraph on 13 May 2022. As the UK’s debut permanent immersive digital art gallery, the building is being converted into a permanent dedicated space for innovative experiential art commissions.

The central exhibition space, developed by the Coventry City of Culture Trust, houses an extensive projection mapping canvas within an 800 square metre area. The installation is completed by numerous high-quality video projectors and an immersive sound system.

Filling the space

Barco has been selected to provide its G100-W22 projectors with lenses, to help provide visitors with the best possible visual experience. The venue will bring an array of internationally acclaimed artists to the city, beginning with Turkish-born Refik Anadol.

Reel Store’s first major exhibition, Machine Memoirs: Space, is the outcome of a collaboration with NASA, using artificial intelligence (AI) to reinterpret two million images of space taken by the International Space Station, as well as NASA satellites and telescopes, which have captured outer space.

Machine Memoirs: Space will provide Coventry with a 360-degree visual cinematic experience accompanied by 3D audio, allowing audiences to encounter the splendour of space science, entirely through AI.

Start of a legacy

The new visitor attraction is a notable feature of the upcoming City of Culture legacy program which will take place this summer.

Chief executive of The Coventry City of Culture Trust, Martin Sutherland, says: “We are delighted to have Barco’s support at the Reel Store, which is going to be a real jewel in the crown for the city.

“Barco is a world leader in its field and the technology it is providing will help us to create truly immersive and spectacular exhibitions for visitors to the gallery, who will come from the city, the region and, indeed, from all over the world. It is a testament to the fact that we are the UK City of Culture that Barco is supporting us in this way.”

Barco sales director Richard Marples adds: “We are thrilled to have been selected by The Coventry City of Culture Trust to support the unique project of The Reel Store. We have been fortunate to have contributed to similar exhibitions and installations worldwide, and now we are hugely honoured to collaborate on the UK’s first permanent immersive digital art gallery and are looking forward to what the future holds!”

Exhibition tickets can be purchased from The Coventry City of Culture website.
