Four new museums will be established in Sejong, South Korea by 2028, as part of a plan to expand the country’s museum and art gallery infrastructure.
The Korea Herald reports that the projects are part of South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism four-year plan to expand the country’s cultural offering and improve cultural heritage management and accessibility.
The new museums will be part of a national museum complex in Sejong. They include a national urban architecture museum by 2026, a design museum and a digital cultural heritage centre by 2027, and a national archives museum by 2028.
Museums to offer AI, immersive experiences
These museums will offer cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and immersive digital experiences to enhance the visitor experience.
As well as the four new museums, museum storage facilities will be created in Paju, Gyeonggi Province to better manage the country’s cultural assets.
Also, the culture ministry is working to expand educational programmes for children, senior citizens and multicultural families, and aims to improve accessibility for people with special needs.
The museum expansion plan aims to revitalise local culture and regional tourism, and make future-oriented cultural institutions accessible to all, the ministry said.

“By making museums and art galleries more inclusive, sustainable and community-focused, we are ensuring that all citizens can engage with culture in meaningful ways, regardless of location or background,” said Song Yun-seok, director of the regional culture policy bureau at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
In more news, South Korea’s retail giant Shinsegae Group has partnered with US media company Paramount Global to build a new theme park in Hwaseong.
The Star Bay City theme park will be joined in an entertainment complex by a water park, retail experiences, luxury hotels and more.
