Planning permission will be sought in 2018 for the renovation of the disused General Market at Smithfield, with an ambition to open at the new venue in 2022.

With its new building, the Museum of London aims to double its visitor attendance from one million to more than two million and display more of its collection of over six million items, telling the story of London for the last 2000 years.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said, “This major landmark project will be a jewel in our crown. It will reveal 2, 000 years of fascinating London history for Londoners, visitors and every schoolchild in the capital. It will rejuvenate West Smithfield, protecting its heritage while also creating a dynamic new public space – strengthening London’s credentials as an international powerhouse for culture.”

The design for the new Museum of London will be provided by architects Stanton Williams and Asif Khan.

The Museum of London collections will be held underground in dramatic cavernous chambers.
