National Portrait Gallery launches design competition for £35.5m expansion

The National Portrait Gallery in London has launched a competition to find an architect for the design of its new £35.5 million expansion.

The prize is a £2 million contract for the redesign of the Grade I-listed Trafalgar Square building is part of the Inspiring People project, which includes a re-display of the NPG’s collection across all galleries, an extensive refurbishment, restoration of the East Wing and a new Learning Centre.

The project is supported by a grant of £9.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and fundraising activities.

The building works are scheduled to start in 2020, with the reopening of the East Wing by 2023.

The deadline for applications is November 9th.
