Dataland, the world's first museum of AI arts, is opening to the public tomorrow (20 June) in Los Angeles.
Co-founded by Refik Anadol and Efsun Erkılıç, Dataland is located at Frank Gehry's The Grand LA. It was designed in collaboration with award-winning architecture firm Gensler and global sustainable development consultancy Arup.
Described as a space where human imagination is fused with machine intelligence, Dataland is debuting with the Machine Dreams: Rainforest exhibition.
New home for AI-powered art
"For many years, we have dreamed of a place where audience and artwork could merge – a laboratory of imagination where we can explore burgeoning new artforms," said Anadol.
"At Dataland, that dream has now become reality, and we are so excited to open our doors and share it with the public."
Machine Dreams: Rainforest is a series of interconnected environments powered by Refik Anadol Studio's Large Nature Model – the world’s first open-source AI model based solely on nature data.

Guests can connect to the museum via two wearable devices – a custom medical-grade biosensing device worn on the wrist that incorporates visitors' emotional reactions through real-time measurements of heart rates, skin temperatures and skin conductivity, and a device worn around the neck that provides an individualised scent journey.
Across five galleries spanning 25,000 square feet, guests will travel through monumental machine-generated environments inspired by rainforest ecosystems.
Highlights include the Infinity Room, where Anadol’s dream of a glass hummingbird takes flight in a three-dimensional LED cube, as well as the Latent Gallery, where guests can paint with a "thinking brush" and sample an "edible data sculpture".

"Over the past decade, our studio has been fortunate to learn from extraordinary teachers, mentors, collaborators, and heroes whose work has helped shape the cultural landscape," Erkılıç said.
"We see Dataland as a bridge between the visionaries who shaped our past and the creative possibilities of our future."
Machine Dreams: Rainforest will be on view through 31 January 2027.
