York’s National Railway Museum is looking for a lead designer for its £1 million Futures Gallery, planned to complete in 2025.
The museum will select a design team for an estimated £300,000 contract to create the new permanent exhibition, which is part of the museum’s wider redevelopment project called Vision 2025.
The project is expected to start on 1 May. Tenders or requests to participate must be submitted by 5pm on 7 February. More information can be found here.
Vision 2025 projects
Per the brief, “This project requires a creative, multidisciplinary studio or team with a demonstrable track record of delivering exhibitions and visitor attractions.”
The gallery, according to the brief, will “arrange future innovations, trends and solutions into a three-part structure that will take visitors on a journey of discovery”.
The museum’s Vision 2025 projects also include Central Hall, a new building at the heart of the site, as well as an interactive gallery for families called Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery.
Central Hall will include a new welcome area for visitors and additional gallery space. It will be located between the Great Hall and Station Hall. The planning application was submitted in 2022.

The historic Station Hall has now closed temporarily for a £10.5m refurbishment as part of the museum’s redevelopment. It will be closed for an expected 18 months.
“Station Hall is one of the most popular parts of the National Railway Museum and home to the museum’s royal carriages, but the condition of the roof meant that temporarily closing the hall was the only viable option to enable us to protect and preserve this unique listed structure,” said Charlotte Kingston, the museum’s head of design, exhibitions and communications.
Part of the Science Museum Group, the National Railway Museum explores the history of rail transport in the UK.
